The French organised batteries d’anti-char auto-moteurs (BACA), or self-propelled anti-tank bat-teries, of Laffly W15 TCC (T for tracteur or tractor and CC for Chasseur de char, or tank-hunter) tank-hunters when they realised their lack of mobile anti-tank weapons.
The Laffly W15 TCC mounted the powerful APX 47mm anti-tank gun on the rear of a Laffly W15 artillery tractor.
These tank-hunters were very effective. In only eight days of combat 54ème BACA destroyed 28 tanks, five armoured cars, and shot down a fighter aircraft, with none of its tank-hunters damaged by the enemy.
